Abstract
To be successful, rail freight operations have to be organised on a Europe-wide level, and the transport service needs to be delivered at a consistently high level and cannot be dependent on national borders. The transmission of information across national borders is still inadequate, as national vehicle information systems are far from being harmonised. As a result, IT-supported tracking of cross-border freight transport is currently only partially feasible. The TAF TSI is designed to regulate interoperable data exchange, but does not say anything about the source and quality of the data. But where is the information to come from with a sufficient level of availability, quality and timeliness? This is putting an ever greater premium on obtaining autonomous, correct, complete current-status information at the European level.
